Blue Mountains Panther
What does this have to do with Australian big cats. For starters, we are talking about a version of the blue mountains panther, or, Lithgow panther to be more precise.
Now what is the most obvious difference, head wise, between a leopard and a felis cattus(domestic cat).Besides head size, the next most obvious is ears. The Lithgow panther had….pointed ears, and leopards have ..round ears..Meaning the Lithgow “panther” was a large felis cattus.
But what did the media and “researchers” at the time miss in the story(the Lithgow Panther) as it unfolded.
1/That the animal had pointed ears.
2/That the “panther” had a friend that was a normal coloured domestic cat.
3/That they just had to get the Pounds who filmed the sequence to get an object of known size..place it in the same spot as the cat they filmed…and use the same zoom.Did anyone try that.No..Too easy.
Now back to point 3.
Would a Panther hang round with a domestic cat as a little “friend”.No.It would kill it.And the killer point. The domestic cat was nearly the same size as the “panther”.Damn…but everyone just ignored that at the time..like everything else.It appears that when filming large felis cattus, up a hill, we can lose perspective of the size and over emphasise, accidently, the size of the animal..and there is something to do with the colour black as well which makes an animal look more exotic.!!
